Water is a lifeblood. Everybody knows that. That’s why the search for water is always ongoing.  The good news about this is that there is a lot of water to be found. It’s a skill, however, to know how to find it and what the best ways are to drill for it once it has been located. Many companies are discovering and drilling for water, but only one with a better track record for finding water for their clients.

Water has a lot of different uses for people. That’s why it is such an important job to drill for water. People need water to survive. Cattle and plants need water. Industry uses water for many different purposes. But at the base of all these needs, there are companies to service them.

To help ensure you fully understand the process, what to expect, and other factors, we have created a guide here and answered some of the most common questions that may be asked.

What Is the Difference Between a Bore and Well?
A bore is drilled into the ground by a machine and usually has a smaller diameter. Wells are usually sunk by hand and larger in diameter.

Can you access my site during the wetter months?
It is possible to access property and drill a bore or well while it is wet outside. This may impact the ability we have to reach groundwater and is something we can discuss with you at the time the work is being done.

What Are the 3 Types of Water Wells?

The three types of water wells include:
  • Dug or Bored Wells: These are holes in the ground created with a backhoe or shovel.
  • Driven Wells: Created by driving pipe into the ground to a level of 10 to 15 metres deep.
  • Drilled Wells: Created with rotary drilling or percussion machines and are often thousands of feet deep.
Each of these provides pros and cons. It is a good idea to do more research on each one to determine what is best for your home or property.

How Do You Know When You Hit Water When Drilling a Well?
There are several indications that will let you know when you have found a good water-bearing layer. These include:
  • Cuttings indicate the drill has hit a zone of sand or gravel, which product abundant volumes of water if saturated.
  • Increase in the speed of the hole being drilled when a permeable sand aquifer has reached.
  • The gravel begins to cause the bit to bounce.
  • The drilling mud begins to thin.
  • Noticeable reduction in drilling fluid.
  • Water temperature drops.

Can you dig a well anywhere?
As long as the right permits are in place, wells can be placed anywhere.

How to find the best place to drill a water well?
Finding the right place to drill a water well on your property is dependent on several factors. It is best to work with the professionals to ensure the right location is found.

What are the steps of drilling a water well?
When you decide to have a water well or borehole drilled, the first step is for a hydrogeologist to find the right location for a borehole. They will use an array of drilling methods to determine the geophysical properties in a certain area.
The second step is the actual drilling and construction of the well. Once the hole is drilled the unstable lengths of the borehole are still cased to help reinforce the tube. To gauge the total amount of a domestic water borehole our team will conduct an aquifer test will be done. This involves the installation of a test pump and the pumping of a borehole water for certain variables at a given time and a given rate. When this is done, we will then assess the impact on the water level in the borehole. Maximum yield will be achieved by increasing the total abstraction rate, making sure an optimize drawdown of water in the borehole is present.
The type of pumping system and the piping that is installed in the new domestic water borehole is dependent on how the borehole water is going to be used.

Can a Well be Drilled Through Rock or Limestone?
The answer to this is “yes.” As long as the right equipment is used, it is possible to drill the well through any material, no matter what it is or how hard it may be.

Is it legal to drill your own well?
Drilling a well to access groundwater requires you to get the necessary well permit for the work that is being done. This helps to ensure that the groundwater resources are fully protected.

All you need to know about water bores
What is Bore Water?
Bore water is a source of groundwater that’s been accessed by drilling a bore into an underground water storage, which is called an aquifer.

What Can You Use Bore Water For?
The way you use bore water will depend on its quality. The quality is directly related to the salt levels in the water you have tapped into. In Victoria, the quality of bore water will vary. You can find some options that are drinking water quality, while other supplies are only able to be used for industry, livestock, gardens, and irrigation. It is important to have the bore water tested before using it for anything.

How Do You Know if You Have Bore Water?
The bore’s supply can be tested. This is done by the experts pumping the bore in a controlled way and by measuring change in the level of water in the pumping bore and in nearby bores. From the analysis from the data created by the pumping test the right depth for pump installation and the possible yield from a bore can be found.

Can You Dig a Bore Anywhere?
Before digging a bore it is necessary to meet the requirements, such as a water license, development approval, or finding and hiring a licensed bore driller.

How to Find a Bore on Your Property?
Science and technology are used to find bore water and to achieve superior drilling results. During the testing process, some of the things considered including the satellite, geological, and airborne geophysical and hydrogeological data all relevant to the property. The professionals may also study the known bores and groundwater resources in the area, the subsurface structure, and the rock types.

How Do We Determine the Best Location for a Water Bore?
There are several factors that must be considered when choosing the right location for a bore. Some of the specific considerations that we will make include:
  • The slope of the land
  • The proximity to other bores in the area
  • The groundwater level
  • The power source
Each of these factors are going to impact where the bore or well is placed on or around your property.

Are Water Bores Only Available in Certain Areas of Victoria?
The availability of a bore is in any location where there is an aquifer present. If there isn’t an aquifer present, then a borehole will not be possible. It is important to have the ground tested to help find out if it is possible to create a borehole.

Do bores run out of water?
Each borehole has unique characteristics. A borehole that is just meters away from another one may have a totally different level of water and delivery abilities. However, if you and your neighbor are using the same aquifer, it may result in over pumping, which means the borehole could dry up.

Is bore water free?
Once you have had the borehole created and pump installed, you can pump water from the aquifer at no additional cost to you.

How is bore water tested?
To have your bore water tested, you can contact the NATA accredited laboratory and request a Standard drinking water test. This will determine the quality of your water from the bore hole.

Is Borewell Water Good for Health?
Depending on the local characteristics, bore water might be suitable for an array of uses including flushing toilets, stock watering, washing cars and clothes, and more. It is also fine for showering, drinking, and food preparation. However, it is possible for bore water to get contaminated by human activities and natural processes. It is best to have the water tested to confirm its quality.
